Marin Music: guide

Everything about music: commands, the web dashboard, importing playlists, sources, the equalizer, permissions and what to do if something doesn't play.

One bot. One player. Your music, your queue, your rules. Marin Music is free, with no paid features, and it doesn't insert ads.

Start in 30 seconds

  1. Join a voice channel.
  2. Type /play and what you want to hear. While you type, Marin suggests real songs.
  3. The player shows up with buttons: pause, skip, volume, queue, lyrics, save and equalizer.
  4. To control it from your browser, open the web dashboard → your server → Music.

Marin searches free music catalogs. Many commercial hits aren't there: if it can't find what you asked for, it says so instead of playing something else.

Commands

CommandWhat it does
/playPlays a song, an artist or an audio link.
/searchSearches and lets you pick several.
/radioLive radio from Radio Browser.
/pause /skip /previous /replay /seekSong controls.
/queue /loopView, reorder, shuffle and repeat the queue.
/volume /eqVolume and 10-band equalizer.
/stop /leaveStop and disconnect Marin.
/nowplaying /lyrics /savePlayer again, lyrics and save to Favorites.
/playlistCreate, import, share, rescue and play playlists.
/musicServer settings, sources and diagnostics.

Each command has its own page in the command index. You can also ask >ask to search, play, pause or build a playlist from songs you name; it uses the same permissions as the buttons.

The web dashboard

In /dash → Music there are nine tabs. What you control there applies to the player that's playing; settings are saved with Preview and Apply, like the rest of the dashboard.

TabWhat for
OverviewWhat's playing, how many sources respond and plays over the last 14 days.
PlayerPause, skip, volume, equalizer, queue, add songs and find the video.
LibraryYour playlists and the server's: create, edit, reorder, merge, duplicate, export and restore deleted ones.
ImportStep-by-step wizard with a review before saving.
SourcesWhat each source does and the search order.
Audio10-band equalizer with live preview and a default.
AppearanceOrder, visibility and emoji for each player button.
PermissionsWho can do what, in Discord and in the dashboard.
DiagnosticsChecks whether Marin is missing anything to play, with a report to copy.

The dashboard never starts a voice session by itself: it doesn't know which channel your friends are in. Someone uses /play in Discord first; then you can control it from the browser.

Importing your playlists

Importing means reading your song names and looking for each one in Marin's sources. No audio ever comes from Deezer, Spotify or the files. Use /playlist importar or the dashboard's Import tab, where you can review each song before saving.

FromHowNotes
DeezerPaste a public playlist link.No account or key needed.
CSVUpload the file (up to 1 MB in Discord, 2 MB in the dashboard).Works with Exportify's and almost any sheet with title and artist columns.
TextPaste one song per line.Artist - Title, with the length at the end if you like.
SpotifyPaste the link.Only if this Marin has Spotify credentials, and Spotify only lets apps read your own or collaborative playlists. If it can't, export with Exportify.
YouTubePaste the video or public playlist link.Only if whoever hosts Marin turned YouTube on (with a Lavalink server); then the same videos are saved, with no matching. Otherwise, paste the names as text.
SoundCloud, Apple MusicPaste the names as text. There's no permitted way to read those playlists.

Text example:

Nova Ray - Midnight City Lights Lia - Paper Moon 3:00 The Tides - Ocean Avenue (Live)

CSV example (the first row is the column names; the dashboard lets you choose which is which if it doesn't recognise them):

Track Name,Artist Name(s),Album Name,Duration (ms),ISRC Midnight City Lights,Nova Ray,Neon,236000,USX9P2600001 Paper Moon,Lia,,180000,
  1. Marin looks for each song. With an ISRC the match is exact; otherwise it compares title, artist and length.
  2. You see four lists: found, to review (it shows options), not found and excluded.
  3. Pick the right option for the uncertain ones, exclude what you don't want and search again for the missing ones with a different name.
  4. Save. The ones not found stay in the playlist so you can rescue them later with /playlist rescatar.

You can download a CSV report with the result for each song.

Sources: what each one does

Searching, playing and importing are different things. This table says exactly what each service does in Marin.

In the Sources tab you choose the search order and whether results are combined. If a source fails, Marin tries once more and then looks for the same song on another source before skipping it, and tells you.

YouTube as a source is off by default. Whoever hosts Marin can turn it on by connecting their own Lavalink audio server with the YouTube plugin; YouTube's terms don't allow this use, so it's the host's decision and responsibility, and it can stop working at any time. In those sessions the equalizer and volume work, but volume leveling, the limiter and fade-in don't. /music fuentes and /music diagnostico tell you whether it's on.

We don't promise every song or every service. SoundCloud requires a paid account to use its API and Apple Music has no public way to read playlists.

Equalizer and sound

  • 10 bands, from 32 Hz to 16 kHz, each from -12 to +12 dB, with 9 presets.
  • Volume and equalizer changes are heard within a second or two without cutting the song.
  • In the dashboard, Live preview only changes what's playing; Save as default keeps it for future sessions.
  • Level volume evens out very loud or very quiet songs; the limiter keeps it from distorting.

There's no speed control, no crossfade between songs and no "lossless" modes. Discord sends audio as Opus, a lossy format, so we won't promise lossless quality.

Administrators, people with Manage Server and the DJ roles you choose are DJs. Anyone alone with Marin has full control. People who can open the web dashboard (the owner, administrators and people the owner gave access) control the player like a DJ without being in the channel. Everything is checked on Marin's server, never in the browser.

With music turned off, only settings, viewing, exporting or deleting your playlists, and stopping or disconnecting Marin work.

Videos

In the dashboard, Find the video shows the YouTube video for the song that's playing (thumbnail, title, channel and link). The video only loads if you tap Watch here, plays in your browser and doesn't change what plays in Discord. If this Marin doesn't have video search turned on, you get a YouTube search link.

Ads

Marin never inserts ads. Songs from Audius, Jamendo and Internet Archive don't carry them. Some live radio stations broadcast their own ads, like regular radio: that depends on each station.

Privacy

  • Your playlists are kept until you delete them. Once deleted, they can be restored for 7 days and then they're gone.
  • The queue, who requested each song and the last 50 songs of the session only live in memory and are cleared when Marin leaves the channel.
  • The server can see how many songs played per day and per source, never who listened to what. It can be turned off, and it deletes itself after 90 days.
  • Searches are made by Marin's server: the catalogs receive what you searched for, not your IP or your account.
  • >ask doesn't see what you listened to before. It only sees the current song and the queue if you ask it.
  • All explained in the privacy policy.

If something doesn't play

  1. Use /music diagnostico or the dashboard → Music → Diagnostics. It separates what's missing on the Marin serving you (the same for every server) from what belongs to your server.
  2. Check Marin can Connect and Speak in the voice channel and that the channel isn't full.
  3. If a song fails, Marin tries again, looks for it on another source and otherwise skips it and tells you. Three failures in a row stop the queue.
  4. See the exact messages and what to do in Troubleshooting.

What it doesn't do

  • It doesn't play Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Music or Deezer. From Deezer and Spotify it only reads names to import. YouTube is off by default and only plays if whoever hosts Marin turned it on with a Lavalink server.
  • It has no speed control, crossfade, synced listening rooms or personal history.
  • It doesn't play segmented streams (HLS). Radio stations need to provide a direct audio link.
  • A server has one player at a time.

Credits

Music comes from Audius, Jamendo and Internet Archive, and every song shows its source and link. Radio comes from Radio Browser, lyrics from LRCLIB and import data from Deezer and Spotify. Each song's rights belong to its artists.
