Common problems
If Marin replied with an error, look it up here. Each case shows the message you see and how to fix it.
"Could not update roles" / hierarchy
What you see
- Couldn't update the Discord roles (likely role hierarchy or bot permissions). No change was saved — fix it and try again.
- I can't kick someone with a role equal to or higher than mine.
- I can't time out someone with a role equal to or higher than mine.
How to fix it
- Server Settings → Roles: drag Marin's role above the roles it assigns and the members it moderates.
- Check Marin has not lost permissions (the web dashboard flags this).
- Discord never lets a bot act on the server owner.
A moderator can't use >warn, >mute…
What you see
>…doesn't have any role configured yet. An administrator needs to configure it in /setup → Moderation.- The role(s) configured for
>…no longer exist on this server (they were deleted). An administrator needs to reconfigure it in /setup → Moderation. - You don't have permission to use
>….
How to fix it
- "No role configured": /setup → Moderation → moderator roles or per-command roles.
- "Role no longer exists": someone deleted the configured role; pick another.
- If the command has its own roles, the general moderator roles do not count for that command.
"Moderation is not configured / disabled"
What you see
- Moderation isn't configured yet. Use /setup → Moderation.
- Moderation is disabled on this server.
How to fix it
- /setup → Moderation and enable it.
/phase or /pass say I don't have permission
What you see
- The Ranking module isn't configured. An administrator needs to use /setup.
- Your role isn't configured to use ranking commands.
- You don't have permission to assign a phase below 2 (requires an exempt role, or use /pass).
How to fix it
- An Administrator must complete /setup → Ranking and add your role to "roles allowed to rank".
- If the phase-2 floor is on, phases 0 and 1 are recorded with /pass or you need an exempt role.
/addspot says to use it in another channel
What you see
- Run this command in ….
- You don't have permission to manage the leaderboard. Configure it in /setup → Leaderboard.
How to fix it
- The server limited leaderboard commands to certain channels. Use them there, or ask an Administrator to change that list in /setup → Leaderboard.
"This user has no registered profile"
What you see
- This user doesn't have a registered profile. They need to use
/profilefirst.
How to fix it
- The player has to create their profile first from the server's profile panel (or when verifying).
>ask says it is disabled
What you see
- The assistant (>ask) is turned off in this server. An administrator can turn it on in /setup → Ask Assistant.
How to fix it
- An administrator turned it off. It is turned back on in /setup → Premium Modules → Ask Assistant or in the web dashboard; it does not require Premium.
Slash commands don't show up
How to fix it
- Discord can take a few minutes to show new commands. Restart Discord (Ctrl+R on desktop).
- If you added Marin with a different link, invite it again from /invite, which includes slash commands.
- Check Server Settings → Integrations → Marin: commands can be hidden per role or channel there.
A > command doesn't respond
How to fix it
- Marin needs to view the channel, read history and send messages in it.
- Check the command exists in the index and is spelled right:
>profile, not> profile. - Without Premium,
>securityshows a Premium notice instead of the panel.
"Only … can do this" in the >security panel
What you see
- Only … or higher can do this.
- Only administrators can open Marin Security.
- This panel belongs to someone else. Open your own with >security.
How to fix it
- Viewing is for Administrators; changing and restoring is for Security Managers; appointing Security Managers is for the server owner. If the panel says it belongs to someone else, open your own with
>security. See Permissions.
The verification portal won't load or expired
How to fix it
- The link lasts 30 minutes and works once. Request another from the verification panel.
- Some VPNs or proxies get the verification flagged for review; they do not block it automatically, but staff will see it.
My server doesn't appear in the web dashboard
How to fix it
- You must be the owner, have Administrator or have been given dashboard access in that server, and Marin has to be in it.
- Sign out and back in to refresh the server list Discord gives us.
